Spoilers are allowed on fanfic pages as far as I know.

Okay. So why was I threatened with suspension for placing spoilers?

The troper must not understand the rules. But they're not a mod, so you don't need to worry about a suspension.

Should we send a PM to Gideoncrawle about the situation?

I can't see pre-release spoilers being a problem for fan works, because the only people who tend to know them are the same people who wouldn't want them spoiled.

The only fic I remember this being a problem for is Copacetic, because the author told a few readers the ending via PM.

Magnus, did he actually say he was going to suspend you? Because pretending to be a mod is a serious offense.

He's still pulling that? I remember when he kept going on about one particular example regarding Mal's appearance on Total Drama Avengeance: Old Losers vs New Losers being "too spoilery" and actively going out of his way to remove any context or anything that explained the example properly (even though the character's appearance had to be spoilered since them merely being there in a pre-All-Stars season is a pretty big spoiler in on itself), and he was acting like he was the sole authority on how it was supposed to be spoilered (and how TD fanfic pages in general are supposed to be written) even though he personally admitted he hadn't even read the fic.

OK, I've checked something. On the one hand, the spoiler tags are a bit excessive. On the other hand they are not forbidden and these PMs were a bit officious.

Okay, this blew up a little more than I expected. To give some belated responses.

@ gjjones. Sounds like a good idea.

@ Arctimon. He didn't say he would suspend me, but if I remember correctly, he said he would report me to the mods to get me suspended.

@N8han 11. Huh. So, I'm not the only one whose dealt with him. That's pretty arrogant of him. I've done plenty of editing on TD fanfic pages, and Despair Island and Predator and Prey (the latter page I created) are the only ones I've had problems with him (although the second was due to me misusing Bystander Syndrome).

@ Septimus Heap. What makes the spoiler tags excessive?

I don't think the spoiler tags are excessive either. The one problem I found was two tropes separated by a slash on one bullet point, which was easily fixed since one of them was just a redirect to the other.

Sounds like Tropers.Gideoncrawle is minimodding... Threatening other tropers in general is being a dick, and that's not something we really want here. Especially if they're combining that with minimodding.

That said, I believe the spoiler tags being excessive is that it's whiting out the entire entry (sans the trope name); that violates spoiler policy in that it's a Administrivia.Self Fulfilling Spoiler. If the reader has to highlight an example just to see if it's something they don't want to be spoiled on, then it's not really worth spoilering out.

That page has nine such examples right now.

^ A self-fulfilling spoiler is if the trope name is also whited out; hiding all of the context but leaving the trope name visible is allowed, as far as I know.

^I believe that keeping the trope name visible is irrelevant; the mods have said previously not to white out the whole text after the trope name.

^ Mods aren't agree on that issue. AFAIK, the verdict is that it's poor writing but isn't wrong.

I agree that when possible, we should give some non-spoilery context (like the chapter or episode where the spoiler happens).
