I think this may be Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord. Apparently there's a character called Murphy's Ghost and the game seems to fit the description.

I remember watching my dad play this RPG with 8-bit graphics. It was either an old PC game or an NES game. I think there was dungeon crawler GUI outside the battles. I can remember there was an enemy called "Murphy's Ghost", and that the goal was, according to my dad, to defeat a villain who I have forgotten the name of and never actually saw. I think there was something about progressing through floors of the dungeon to reach the villain.
Does anyone know what this game is?
