Also part of Sci-Fi Writers Have No Sense of Scale - they don't understand how big the sky is, and thus how much sky there is between "close to the ground" and "in outer space"

In softer sci-fi, spaceships taking off or landing are either shown in the lower atmosphere (no more than a few miles up) or far enough away that the entire planet shows up in the background (thousands to hundreds of thousands of miles up). They're never in the upper atmosphere or low orbit (tens to hundreds of miles up).
