I think you are right. Because the mods decided that the Audience-Alienating Premise only works when the show is a flop.

Speaking of that page, does the food section fit the criteria? How can you tell with food?

Its removed from the menu?

You are correct. The trope page clearly states"It only counts if (the work) actually fails to meet expectations".

I think most examples in food should be cut since:

  1. Most have exited for centuries meaning it appeals to some niche.
  2. Most are hated by foreign cultures which is Americans Hate Tingle.

The removed from the menu, that's objective enough to count. Are there any well known examples of such?

None of the examples were "removed from the menu" because they are traditional stuff that isnt part of a menu. But Im glad my suggestion was considered.

>Half the entries on that page were successful in spite of the premise.

Then half the entries on that page are misuse and should be removed. "Someone else did it wrong too" isn't a reason to keep a bad entry.

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.

Update: I PM's the troper and they admitted they were unaware of this cleanup.

I'm gonna remove food for the stated reasons.

How do we go about cleaning up books? They don't give sales figures or any metrics and can be very niche.

...ya know, I'm starting to wonder if this is even worth keeping.

It is. There are plenty of legitimate examples. Even if they arent as many.

What is a "legitimate examples" under literature? How can you tell? What would a commercial failure look like for a book?

Books that fail to get reprints? ...I dunno. You got me there.

The book gets a sequel? It gets adapted?

But there are a lot of perfectly fine-but-relatively-obscure books thar don't have sequels or adaptations, and yet aren't by any means failing to attract an audience- even smaller audiences count as audiences...

"...ya know, I'm starting to wonder if this is even worth keeping."

Honestly, I've felt that way for a while. It's always been a mess of either complaining or complaining about complaining. At best it's more a definition of a concept than an actual tropeworthy thing.

(Though as with a lot of YMMV 'tropes', I also think there's a huge problem with the site seeming to want a single definitive opinion on things when those almost never exist).

Should I get rid of books since none offer a metric to measure the alienation nor can we come up with one (I thought Creator Killer but the one example I found was due to issues unrelated to reception)?

tbh Audience-Alienating Premise seems to boil down to "is weird", and that's not tropeworthy. at all.

^ To me it seems like it means "So weird that it bombed."
