Thwarted Escape, though you might have something in the "Took a Shortcut to get out ahead of someone you're chasing" aspect.

The classic idiom for it is "cutting them off at the pass", which comes from a cliche of old westerns where the chaser knew a shortcut to a bottleneck (like a mountain pass) that the people they were chasing would have to go through, letting them set up an ambush.
