Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread

Before you do, bear in mind that Woolseyism is not "translation makes changes that are particularly clever". It's "translation makes changes to make something work in the other language". To quote the page itself:
To use Pokemon as an example, translating the Pokemon Usokki's name as Sudowoodo. "Usokki" just means "liar tree" in Japanese, and Sudowoodo (pseudo wood) gets that same pun across where a direct translation would not. That it's (in my personal opinion) clever is a bonus, but the goal, and thus the Woolseyism, is that it gets the same meaning the Japanese name was going for across to English speakers.

After comparing a bunch of Pokémon dubbed episodes to their subbed counterparts, I think that the series deserves a woolseyism page unto itself. With the original dub, at least, there’ve been a bunch of clever changes to the original script, far more than I could list here. Permission to create?
