The Gilligan Cut is just one way this can be shown, and the revelation that the promise can't be carried out doesn't have to immediately follow the promise itself.

So someone starts with a Wrong Assumption and makes The Promise on someone else's behalf and is proven wrong, instantly or otherwise? I don't know if that's all one trope. Making claims on someone else's behalf could maybe fall under Fake Ultimate Hero if they're outlandish enough.
