Could be a Guide Dang It! (like Katawa Shoujo, where you have more than a 50% chance to wind up dead due to not committing to a girl's route. I learned that the hard way.)
Edited by Xion_the_Undead-Huntress I may be a king without a land, but I am still a KING!Seconding Guide Dang It!
This is also one of the Classic Video Game "Screw You"s and types of Fake Difficulty particular to Visual Novels, and in extreme cases (the Katawa Shoujo example above sounds like one) fall into Unwinnable by Design.

The critical choice that leads to the game's bad ending has already been made, but the game gives no indication of this. You play through same kind of scenes as you'd get for the good paths for a while, then suddenly hit the bad ending. Fairly common in the kind of Visual Novel that isn't explicit about what kind of effect your choices will have down the road.
