That first one actually means that both parents are absent/dead, not necessarily literal abandonment

^^^I was speaking as it applies to your example; cases where the parent(s) is(/are) not merely bad at parenting but have completely abandoned their family

also interesting side fact: "deadbeat" comes from clockwork jargon for a "ticking" mechanism in a continuous system. Say, a clock's second hand geared to move in one-second increments rather than a continuous glide.(Thus making it look "lazy and stubborn" compared to the constantly moving parts around it)

I'm thinking more of parents who aren't completely absent from their children's lives, but don't really care about them and whose presence is sporadic at best
