And upon actually reading it, the trivia-item description for Word of God does seem to be consistent with the claim that it only applies to statements about canon, and not just any old thing a creator said about a work.

I don't think Word of God is limited to canon discussions. This sort of cleanup should be preceded by a discussion IMO.
