I remember catching this intriguing film on the sci-fi channel in the 90s but the costumes and set designs were more like early/mid 70s, including the futuristic planned community (I'll get to that).
What I remember is an opening shot of a really tall building with lots of elevators, sort of Blade Runner-esque but not as good effects. Then a hardboiled detective character fries an egg (no pun intended) and talks into a high-tech typewriter (heavy zeerust in this movie) that records his speech as text. I think he is interrupted and someone comes in, after some trouble with the voice-typing machine. The detective says something about eggs and cholesterol and sort of implied that they were either illegal in the future the movie takes place in or that no one ate them. Then, the detective learns of and is sent to solve a murder in a planned futuristic community.
It had some similarities to the Kim Newman story "Tomorrow Town" but it was a movie with different (but similar) characters, if I recall correctly.
