Edit: I misread your question. I suppose you could consider "genre" a trope all by itself, but it's so broad as to be useless for analysis. It'd be like calling "narrative" a trope, or "characters". Obviously they are tropes, but not useful ones.

I know that individual genres are tropes, but is the concept of "genre" a trope itself? Because fitting a work into a genre does serve a specific storytelling purpose, to communicate to the audience what sort of overall experience they should expect to have.
