Is there a trope for having to help everyone and their mother with their problems before they agree to help you?

Two examples I can think of:

In Red Dead Redemption, John Marston finds himself doing a lot of favors for snake oil salesmen, craven grave robbers, corrupt government officials (on both sides of the border), and others to track down Bill Williamson and his other former gang partners.
In Mass Effect 2, Shepard has to help some of their possible recruits out with personal requests before they join, from helping Samara find a manifest in her hunt for a fugitive to helping Mordin cure a plague on Omega, a task which gives us the relevant quote: "Just once, I'd like to ask someone for help and hear them say 'Sure, let's go, right now'."

Fetch Quest ("you need this? Do this for me first"), 20 Bear Asses ("You need this? Bring me X amount of that.") and/or Broken Bridge ("You need to go here? Not before you do this, this and this.").
