This is a real long shot: A memory of an isolated scene I think I saw when I was in preschool.
In the mid to late '80s there was a cartoon with a Mediæval setting where people were destroying shields that had pictures of dragons on them. I think they were throwing magic fireballs to melt the shields, which were lined up on a stone wall. Somebody said, "They are worthless." I think this was happening because people no longer believed there were any dragons in the world to fight (they were later proved wrong).
