The main reasons I can see for why people might want to keep the old name is that 1) it's the name that's been used for the vast majority of the character's publication history, and 2) it's the name of Marvel's most iconic (and "feminist") female superhero, while "Captain Marvel" is a generic legacy title that's been applied to half a dozen or something cookie cutter flying bricks (never mind the DC hero and relations).

In other words, there are two potential problems. The first is simple name recognition; the second is the character's meta-historical importance in the larger context of increasing the representation of women in superhero comics. Is it a reasonable concern that changing the name will diminish and invisibilize the history of a strong female character who is not so unusual nowadays, but was an important symbol and challenger of the status quo when she first appeared? I'm not posting any opinion myself here, but I know there are at least some people who do feel very strongly about these things, and might raise the issue.

For the other factor (name recognition): among the fans I'm familiar with, at least, people who know of and care about the character still very much tend to think of "Carol" as Ms Marvel, even if that name has been discontinued for these last few years. Though I suppose, if the movie is successful, it might bring in new readers and change that. So that could probably go either way.
