In the mid-2000s, I saw an entirely live-action Asian-made (I feel sure it was Chinese, but it could have been Japanese) film, entirely starring Asian actors, speaking a subtitled Asian language. It was set in medieval China (I think; it could have been Japan), during a war, and featured both armies battling and individual fighting. Some particular scenes come to mind:
1) A massive hail of arrows is fired by an army onto what appears to be (at least partially) a school of calligraphy. While some students are working inside, a master of theirs (a woman) catches a large number of the arrows with her robes while standing on the roof.
2) A series (I think three) of short, similar scenes in which a warrior (either male or female, can't remember), wearing appropriately matching-colored robes perform impressive and pretty feats of nonlethal swordwork (like smashing every pot on a circular set of shelves in one elegant swoop) in a smallish room bathed in one color: red, white and blue were used, not sure if more were.
3) A scene where a male main character with a very long mane of hair (as many of the men in this film did, incidentally) has it combed by a giggling young woman who then has (not explicit) sex with him (or at least just makes out or something). Another woman sees (not in a sexual way at all tho) from a corridor or thru a shoji screen or something.
The whole film was fairly long, very stylized and quite dreamy. Despite its violence, it wasn't gory I think. Its production values were flawless; it didn't look or feel low-budget at all.
Thanks in advance for any help. I hope this isn't too vague, but it's sitting right on the edge of my brain and I burn to find it again!
