Oh, I found it. Bel Canto by Ann Patchet. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5826.Bel_Canto I remember a lot now. It's very melodramatic. I can't believe I forgot the opera motifs.
I can't remember the name of a novel I read a summary of once. A group of wealthy (?) people are held hostage at some function. I think it takes place in the far east or somewhere 'foreign' like that. It had a big cast of characters but one of the plot points was a couple fall in love despite not even having a common language/being able to communicate. The woman in the relationship was definitely one of the hostages but I don't remember if the guy was also a hostage or an assailant or what. I think the hostages are released in the end.
