I can't tell from your example — is the cold an actual cold and everyone's reacting like it's tuberculosis, or is it probably tuberculosis but everyone's acting as if it's just a cold?

What's it called when a character gets sick with what is only ever described as a cold, yet it is portrayed like a debilitating illness that makes them pass out, and keeps them from going to school/work, or even getting out of bed?
