Random guess, but Phantom Tollbooth? It's probably not it...

Gosh that sounds cool. I can only think of the Barney film which doesn't really fit. So it was definitely animated?

Do you remember what the kid and his parents looked like?

You couldn't really see them. You just see the car and hear them talking.

^ I thought Dungeons and Dragons was a tabletop role-playing game, not a movie.

If not for this anchor I'd be dancing between the stars. At least I can try to write better vampire stories than Twilight.

^ There are a number of licensed works based on D&D, I assume lalalei2001 means the 80's animated adaption - Dungeons & Dragons

Sorry, but it is definitely something else.

"The Seventh Brother" is an animated film that has a scene near the beginning of a car driving through a tunnel with lights on the sides. It's actually the translated (and censored) version of a foreign movie called "Bobo och Kaniner" or "Bobo und die Hasenbande" which may be what you're looking for. The foreign versions have a longer sequence of the car driving through lighted tunnels at the very beginning, and the sound of a child and parent talking to each other. I hope this helps.
