Um...I haven't read this in a really long time, but it kind of sounds vaguely like Gifts by Ursula K. Le Guin? I remember it had a bunch of families with different powers who are always warring with each other, and the main character spends most of the book blindfolded.

A while ago I read this book about two main characters, one of which is blind (I think). They start out in the forest. The mother of one of them had been carried off from the south by her husband, and they ended up in the less civilized north. The characters are running away from something, and it has to do with the fact that the north is divided into family clans. There's also the generic system of supernatural powers and everything. I'd really like to find the book since I never actually finished it. (sorry about the vague description).
