I think the former is supposed to be a subtrope of the latter. BBD would not cover three minor members of the Rogues Gallery teaming up, for example.

I think...

  • Villain Team-Up: Previously established, independent villains unite for this story. Their number and organization is irrelevant.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: There must be two of them, and they must be roughly equal (or else this just becomes a pairing between the Big Bad and The Dragon, or between the Big Bad and the Bigger Bad). Whether they were previously independent characters doesn't matter.

^ Hmm, the second line of Big Bad Duumvirate says there could be more than two. Equal in power could also apply for Villain Team-Up. There is an overlap of about 20 works which are mentioned on both pages, amongst them Batman: The Movie and Batman Forever.

Yeah, they aren't mutually exclusive definitions. It's totally possible for a work to fall under both.
