Have you messaged them on this?

Not yet. Wasn't quite sure if I should use a premade like "bowdlerizing" or actually write one out. So figured I'd get a second opinion first.

It's best to notify the offending users first and then report them here should they fail to reply.

Message sent. I mostly outlined a few of the problematic edits, noted my concerned about Bluenose Bowdlerizers, and asked what, if anything, was going on.

Some of the edits don't seem like straight Bowdlerization to me - I mean, "dimwit" may be less offensive than "idiot", but most of the changes seem to be just the editor disagreeing with stylistic choices. I don't think that's quite kosher - if the text uses an idiomatic phrase correctly, changing it just because you don't like it is overriding another editor's stylistic choices just for the sake of it.

Since the word is capitalized either way, "Idiot" to "dimwit" could be a correction of a term used in-series. Though the Get Ahold Of Yourself Man entries are turning legitimate idioms to phrases I've never really heard before.

Changing words just because it's something you (general you) don't like isn't kosher here. If it's a more widely problematic word, that's a different issue -but that doesn't seem the case here.

It's been about a week now. No response to my PM, only a few edits since, though they seem fine. So not sure if maybe I was worrying for nothing or not.

Seems almost like a weird species of Bluenose Bowdlerizer with strange standards.

Someone should call them in to see what's up.

I'm wondering if there's a name for the kind of editor who makes drive-by edits to change word choices and turns of phrase just because they don't like them?

They're not a bowdlerizer, because bowdlerization is about making a work more child friendly or acceptable for the censors. And they're not grammar nazis either, because they're not correcting mistakes (ore even perceived mistakes), but changing correct usages into some other correct usage which they just happen to prefer.

^ annoying. Like the tropers who only make edits to actively change your edits to be US/UK English instead of the other (mostly from UK to US), as if theirs is the only correct version...
