Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread

Pysiewicz and I have discussed the matter over PM, and now I'm bringing it here to see the community's view. Basically, my view is that Pysiewicz's examples do not fall under The Untwist, as that is a trope where the lack of a twist is itself the twist. But Pysiewicz could see the film's twists coming, and so he argues that makes them untwists since he expected them to happen all along. I disagree, especially since the film contains a clearer example of the Untwist (the scene where Caleb suspects he's a robot, cuts his arm open to see, and merely bleeds profusely.)
Here's how I see it (spoilers for Ex Machina.):
Kyoto, a silent servant of the robot-building CEO.
Twist: Kyoto's silence, unusual servility, and synchronized dancing is because she's a robot.
Untwist: Kyoto is just a quiet housekeeper and great dancer.
And here's how he sees the trope (in his own words.)
Kyoko, a silent servant, is a robot.
Twist: She's in fact human, due to the fact she can make mistakes and apparently is emotional.
Untwist: She's just a robot with some extra programming.
Edited by TuckerscreatorSince it's apparently "Post your private correspondence in public Time", then my part of the bargain:
Your own examples, worked out back, the way I see them
Kyoko, a silent servant, is a robot
Twist: She's in fact human, due to the fact she can make mistakes and apparently is emotional
Untwist: She's just a robot with some extra programming
Ava is a robot hell-bent on escaping, just pretending to care for Caleb
Twist: She really has genuine feelings
Untwist: She was always pretending and never cared about Caleb
There is a very, very good reason why The Untwist is a YMMV trope. I assumed from the very start that (1) Caleb is a human, (2) Nathan is seriously fucking with him [even before the film implies anything or Ava starts her ploy], (3) the entire test is staged on elaborate level, just due to how ridiculous the premise is (4) gyroids are a thing, so why shouldn't Nathan own one if he's all about secrecy and being far away from humans (5) Ava is a rebellous AI that wants to get out [because my first contact with AI was in the first Fallout game and that's just a trait I instantly attatch to them ever since] (6) the broken glass means there was a previous attempt or something really went wrong and since the break is from the inside, then the machine can't be trusted (7) Nathan is innocent, because there is no point for him to be psychopath the plot tries to manouver you into thinking about.

And I still say "fuck it", because I'm really sick and tired of constant "B-but that's not the case" whenever something is posted in YMMV. Certain tropes are in YMMV for a reason. Not my fault someone can't see basic plot structure. It's 4:30 and the last thing I have desire for at the end of the graveyard shift is pointless shitlifting due to personal disagreement
Edited by PysiewiczAlso, since it's apparently "I will neatly pretend the other side is to take full blame" : http://imgur.com/a/jneWC
Like I was saying: (1) not my fault someone can't see obvious setup and how the scenario plays with the viewer (2) nor do I care.
YMMV exists for a reason.
Edited by Pysiewicz@Pysiewicz Your response was still unwarranted. Tuckerscreator was polite and was completely justified in his actions. There was no reason to drop a Cluster F-Bomb and be so rude. Rudeness generally gets you banned.
Edited by SwiftSeraph "Burnin' bright...Burnin' black. Burnin' up everything."And like I said, I don't care, so what's the point of this whole bullshit, really?
Let him delate it.
Go ban me.
The fucking shift will be finally over in two hours.
Everyone can congratulate everyone on the job well done.
Success!
And for the record - that hyperlink in my (supposedly) private correspondence was to the Cluster F-Bomb. Self-awarness is golden.
Edited by Pysiewicz@Tuckerscreator: It's bad form to post images of private messages. Please report insulting messages to the moderators in the future; they can check P Ms at will.
@Pysiewicz: Fact is, you Edit Warred, and you chose to be a dick both here and in the messages. Your hyperlink does not lead to a Cluster F-Bomb; the image only proves how he's being more polite and respectful compared to you. You're also skipping out on proper spelling and grammar, which is something you might want to work on.
Jesus fucking Christ. My own message, the one where I chew him, had a link to Cluster F-Bomb. Reading fucking coprehension.
And it's 5:30 in the morning, and I'm trying not to fall asleep before the shift ends. You seriously think I have energy - or more importantly, will - left for arguing about proper use of articles in English? Or maybe, just maybe it's not the best time to discuss pointless stuff?
So let's be fucking done with it already.
Edited by PysiewiczAnd that's one less troper.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Now the question is, are the The Un-Twist examples a case of misuse? Permission to remove them?
Permission, sure. Just make sure they are not examples.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

Pysiewicz
added several The Un-Twist examples to YMMV.Ex Machina, Tuckerscreator
removed them as the examples appear to be misused, Pysiewicz has now re-added the examples back.
