It sounds a little bit like the intro to Mystery!, a PBS show with an animated intro by Edward Gorey.

It's definitely not Mystery!, although that is one that keeps popping up when I try to find the show myself. The artwork for Mystery! isn't nearly surreal enough, and the music isn't the same. The music in the video I linked is very, very close to what was done in the show's opening, although the show's music was fully orchestrated (at least most years it was), and I may not have gotten the base line 100% correct in one place.

And thank you for the complement, but it wasn't me playing in the video. I used GNU Denemo to compose a MIDI (http://www.denemo.org/ )

You'll probably be better off just asking about the music, because I'm quite sure it's some classical piece I heard a hundred times.

My mom has identified the music as Paganini's. Perhaps you mean South Bank Show?
