Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
What I'm confused about is why he's only targeting Paleontology tropes. If he has a problem with "complainy" tropes, he should be causing a stink on all the Artistic License pages.
(Disclaimer: I do not find the Artistic License pages to be complaint-filled, myself, they just seem to fit this guy's definition of "complainy".)
Sounds to me like this guy has a Single-Issue Wonk, though it is nice that he's (mostly) taking it to Discussion first rather than arbitrarily changing things.
Edited by DarkHunterYou do sometimes get people who use the inaccuracies as an excuse to complain, without taking into consideration what the term "artistic license" actually means. Some of the older pages, less visited by regulars, are especially bad about that, and so to some extent I see where he's coming from. However, as long as they're not criticizing a work for taking license with whatever, whether deliberate or accidental, there shouldn't be a problem. If it's just pointing out that a work has them, it's fine.
Anyway, going through some of his edits, the discussion pages and his edit reasons, there's enough reason for mod action. He's been here for a while and seems fairly prolific, so I don't know what's up.
Edit: Some of those were from a while ago, and it looks like he's was previously suspended for them. His recent post complaining about "fucking paleonerds" isn't going to win him much sympathy, however.
Edited by supergod For we shall slay evil with logic...Magnus himself here. I do have Single-Issue Wonk about paleontology, but that's a story I'll bore you all with. I'm sure I'm the only person who finds the examples to be "complainy", but it's only just my opinion, and yeah, I get too frustrated for my own good.
@Dark Hunter I don't like the other artistic license pages very much, but the reason why I don't make a fuss over them is because A) I'd get banned for vandalizing multiple pages, and B) my own biases as I explained to Mr. Media. Yeah, they do fill with my definition of complaining, but that's my own long and complex personal reasons, so I won't say further.
@supergod Yeah, I'll admit that was a spiteful comment, but it's not like I can do anything about it. Yes, I am a long time troper, but I try to keep away from "Artistic License"-related pages the best I can. I'm a pretty average troper for the most part and have been here for a long time. I've learned to keep away from pages, I dislike, but when you like prehistoric critters, it gets difficult.
@Mr Media Guy 2 Feeling more clearheaded. To some extent, they are nitpicky (indeed some of the tropers on this site are hardcore dinosaur nerds), but maybe not as horrendously complaining as I fantasize. It's more of my opinions and biases clouding my judgment than anything else though. And yes, it's not the wiki itself I have issues with. If it was, I'd end my TV Tropes account and never come back to this site.
Thank you all for the criticisms and comments.
Edited by MagnusForce "Detecting trace amounts of mental activity. Possibly a dead weasel or a cartoon viewer."@Magnus Force I understand where you're coming from, I really do. I pretty much always argue in favor of writers being allowed to play fast and loose with accuracy when it comes to writing fiction, but it's better to be civil if you want to be heard.
For we shall slay evil with logic...A quick peak at what said user has put in the discussion they are making a mountain out of a mole hill.
Some of the examples do need to be cleaned up because they are excessively nit picky in and of themselves but in general pointing the chronic Holly Wood/Ficitonal portrayal of various things and how much they deviate is not that big a deal.
His discussion entry for Ptero Soarer for example. "Excuse me while I cringe at the complaining displayed in this trope and all other dinosaur tropes on this site. Fucking paleonerds." Sounds like they are taking this way too personallyl.
Edited by TuefelHundenIV Who watches the watchmen?Magnus Force, word of advice. Do not insult people on this site. (Don't insult on this site in general, but it's details we're looking at at the moment.)
The #1 rule of the site is "Don't be a dick." Insulting others is dickish behavior. Dickish behavior gets shoulder taps from the mods.
Okay?
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry Pratchett

There's a user named Magnus Force who goes around on paleontology-related tropes like Artistic License – Paleontology and Ptero Soarer and complains in the discussion page about the examples being complainy, and he removed the pterosaur example from Informed Species (which I re-added) for the same reason.
Thing is, these examples don't come across as complainy, at least not to me, any more than the other tropes pointing out biological inaccuracies. (Like Artistic License – Ornithology and Somewhere, a Herpetologist Is Crying.) Then again, I'm a paleo fan myself, so I'm not sure if I count.
So, what do you think? Does Magnus Force actually have a point, or is he just being nitpicky?
