EDIT: If anybody comes trawling the archives and gets curious... I found it, thanks to a wonderful person on another forum who happened to be reading it at the time. It's called The House on Mango Street. :3 (What I thought was "Maybe So, Maybe No" came from one of the lines in a poem in the book, which actually went, "Yes, no, maybe so".)
When I was a little kid, I read everything I could get my hands on. I'm pretty sure this was assigned reading in one of my mother's college classes, because she rarely reads fiction on her own. I've scoured Google looking for it, but either it's a very obscure book, I'm remembering it wrong, or my Google-fu just isn't up for the task. I've been trying to find it off and on for 15+ years, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here's what I remember about it:
- I read it sometime 1993-1999, though either extreme is EXTREMELY unlikely. (Har har.) It was most likely 1995-1997.
- It was a thin book, probably not more than a couple hundred pages.
- The protagonist was female, POSSIBLY Hispanic but I'm not sure.
- It was "urban"; I think it took place in New York or some other big city. (Or maybe not, but it's at least set in modern times.)
-I THINK it was a collection of short stories, though maybe not, but I think the whole book revolved around the same protagonist. (Again, maybe not. :P)
- I have a very strong color-association of kind of a turquoise-y teal; I'm almost positive that's what color the cover was. There may also have been some brown tones—possibly an impressionistic picture of the protagonist, though maybe not.
- Until my Google-fu failed so spectacularly, I was absolutely positive that the title of the book was "Maybe So, Maybe No". My mother also remembers the title, and that it WAS a book, but she doesn't remember the book itself.
- It's not a children's book.
