I read this children's book a long time ago...this girl goes to an alternate universe somehow and it's mostly located in her house in the alternate universe. I seem to recall her going in a hot air balloon but I might be mixing that up with the Oz books. She finds an alternate her there, who she just thinks of as her twin, and alt!her has a different name, I believe. Alt!Her is peppier and more popular, but really nice, and they become friends. There is also an alt!dog that's black. Maybe a Labrador? But there's also some sort of female guardian, either alt!mom or alt!aunt or something, though I'm leaning toward aunt, and she seems very nice but actually is a witch, or something. One day the dog...falls through a mirror or something and comes back out way different. Doesn't wag his tail or bark happily anymore, just kind of eats and walks. And his eyes look dead inside. And it really concerns the girl and her alt!self. Then her alt!self starts acting weird too, just brushing her hair and smiling with this fixed smile, and her eyes look dead too. And the girl realizes that their souls have been eaten by the alt!aunt. I don't remember the book ending that happily. I seem to remember her being successfully transported back to her own dimension, but the thing where her alt!dog and alt!self's souls are gone was never really fixed?? I remember that unnerving the hell out of me. Preemptively, it wasn't Coraline.
