I've never heard of it, but I heard something similar around the same time you did. I don't know the name, but apparently it wasn't copyrighted and that's how the Harry Potter people were able to make it. I always thought it was just a rumor, but....

I know of several books resembling Harry Potter's first book. Maybe one of them got made into a movie? I'll go researching.

Edited to prove I know proper English. I should NEVER write before I have caffeine.

Oh, thank you! I don't know of any titles resembling it (or rather, the few I know I already know it wasn't them, or they were made AFTER the first Harry Potter movie so it wasn't them either) or I'd go looking myself.

I'm still looking. It's been an off-again on-again activity, and I've been after it whenever I get spare time without much else to do. Also been asking people, but to no response.

If I can ask, when would your mum have been a teen?

It wasn't made into a movie (anime and TV series) until much later. But the Earthsea stories have some very similar bits. (Wizards school, protagonist with scars, a fascination with names).

Asuyuka: Thank you! I appreciate your help a lot.

She was a teen in the sixties, but I was under the impression that she watched it as an adult. I didn't think to ask back when she first brought it up, and she doesn't even remember the conversation now. (It was a very off-handed remark, so I can understand why she didn't think it important and worth remembering it years later.)

Dr Dedman: You're right that the years don't match, so I don't think so either. But thank you!

There is an interesting article on Wikipedia here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Potter_influences_and_analogues

It looks at all kinds of possible Harry Potter influences, both acknowledged by Rowling and also possible influences that she has not acknowledged.

Some of these have been made into movies.

Most writers know that Rowling was just using fairly standard, well, tropes, that nobody really could claim ownership of.

Many Americans when they first read Harry Potter thought it was all new, and now are shocked that there is really a lot of literature similar to Harry Potter, and that these tropes are indeed Older Than They Think

Thank you! I'm checking the list out.
