^ Just for clarity, that one doesn't apply to abused drugs, only the ones that the person probably should be taking- say, their mood stabilizers or chemotherapy.
This sounds more like Macho Masochism, The Teetotaler or an extreme StraightEdger, or a Recovered Addict trying not to fall Off the Wagon.

Okay, so the hero is injured, maybe took a bullet and it has to be removed. The doctor offers some kind of anasthesia or pain-relief, sometimes only in the form of booze. But the hero doesn't want any because he is such a badass (or afraid to lose control).
I remember a scene like this from "Bonanza" (episode: "Second Chance"), and another scene in Lupin III just like it. Is there a trope for it?
