There are plenty of sports-related pages that are troped. If that's not allowed, then I'm afraid there's a lot of work to do.

135 -> 180 -> 273 -> 191 -> 188 -> 230 -> 300 -> 311

Tropes for sporting events are rather tricky. If the event is unscripted — that is, it's actually people competing instead of acting out roles (hello, professional wrestling), then the rules about RL troping apply. Obviously, tropes having to do with marketing and production can still be used, but characterization and plot tropes should not. Subjectives are right out.

What about sportspeople who adopt a "stage persona" to create a certain image, perhaps not during the actual events but for publicity and to attempt to influence their opponents? For example, a boxer who creates an image of extreme aggressiveness even though he's not like that in private?

I already did my part by cutting the examples on one sports page.

135 -> 180 -> 273 -> 191 -> 188 -> 230 -> 300 -> 311

So, for example, this is okay:

Brand Names Are Better: FIFA's "commercial partners" tend to be of the corporate behemoth variety.

And these are not:

And the Adventure Continues: Congratulations, you won the World Cup! Now what? Come back again to the next competition 4 years later to defend your title. But first you must go through a qualifying process which takes roughly 2-3 years.

Idiot Ball: Wayne Rooney moaning about the fans after an awful performance for England against Algeria.
.

But how about things pertaining to the rules of the sport? For instance:

Obvious Rule Patch: The infamous Non-Aggression Pact of Gijón caused a rule change requiring the last two matches of each group to be played at the same time.

^A similar question was raised regarding politicians. Does this mean we shouldn't try to determine whether or not something is part of a persona for them either?

The Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgement and the one about we don't gossip about RL people both apply here.

^^ Obvious Rule Patch is fine, as rules systems are part of the production of a sport. Brand Names Are Better is applicable as it has to do with marketing. As you noted, however, And the Adventure Continues and Idiot Ball are not acceptable because they discuss the behavior of players, managers, fans, etc.

Politicians may be thought of as putting forth a persona in their public life, but that line is too narrow to be comfortable. Useful Notes pages for politicians should only list tropes commonly found in fictional works featuring them.

Okay, glad that's settled. I made an attempt at paring down the The World Cup tropes list to advertising and production tropes. I also cutlisted the Heartwarming, Tearjearker, Awesome, Funny, and YMMV subpages.

How is Brand Names Are Better appropriate for the World Cup page?

2025: the year it all ends?

As an advertising trope, one would imagine. I didn't look at the specific examples to see if they are shoehorned, though: the FIFA example cited above is not, as written, an example of the trope.

Sorry to perform an act of thread necromancy, but this is something I wanted to point out when this subject came up but it fell by the wayside until now: UsefulNotes.The World Cup is not the only sporting event with Awesome/, Funny/, etc. subpages. Just to name a few for Awesome/, there's Awesome.Olympic Games, Awesome.The Stanley Cup, Awesome.Tour De France, Awesome.UEFA Champions League, and Awesome.Formula One, as well as the Awesome.Sports subpage of Awesome.Real Life.

So in the interest of having a consistent policy on this subject, I'd think either all of these pages should be cut as well, or Awesome.The World Cup and the other Sugar Wiki/ subpages of UsefulNotes.The World Cup should be restored.

All of those have to go, I'm afraid.
