The "computerised house threatens family" idea sounds a lot like Demon Seed
, but that was way back in 1977...
@Embryon. Seen Demon Seed, while it's on a similar path it's not it. Nice try though.
@mszegedy. Actually can't remember anybody outright being killed, just sort of assumed. You would have thought the Dad character would have quit the experiment if one of his kids died. Can't really recall anything taking place in a high school.
@Eponymous Kid & originalhobbit. Just read the plot for Smart House. Doesn't ring any bells, but i'll see if I can find some clips to confirm.
@Mazz. I can sort of imagine this happening, but can't distinctly remember it.
After research, Mazz's movie is probably 'Urge to Kill' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0254839/
Reading over the IMDB plot, not much is fitting so I'd say mine is still out there.
I know exactly the movie you're talking about, I remembered seeing it on the syfy channel (back when it was called sci-fi). The title escapes me too, but I remember more from the movie.
Does your movie have spider-like cleaning bots, a mobile appliance the size of a dishwasher that has a knife that stabs intruders (that the daughter witnessed but no one believed her), and a scene where either the mother or daughter is trapped in the shower as it fills with water? If so, then we may be thinking of the same film.
At the time, I checked my local TV listing (which was unreliable as my cable company showed the east-coast feed while the listings showed the west coast times) to see the title, and I think it was "Bad Dream House", but IM Db, Google, and Wikipedia apparently never heard of it.
I can still picture the cleaning bots! The daughter and mother were afraid of them when they first appeared, the father explained what they were and how they were harmless. Can't really recall any intruder stabbing, or a shower scene but then it would tie in excellently with "covers up the camera with a towel". I've had a look in and around that possible title too, but can't find anything. Strange, if it is called that.
Glad that another person's seen it.
I think we've got it. The plot on imdb ticks all the boxes. Reading through the user comments solidifies it. Only problem being now is that I can't find any ways to buy/watch it, there aren't even trailers available. Closest I've found is an out of stock region 1 VHS which is wrong on all counts.
But anyway... thanks everyone, especially Ossley. Glad it's finally been found.
Unfortunately I don't remember the name (I'm sorry!), the movie I watched had a whole family living there: Mom, Dad, child(ren). Now that I've thoughta bout it, I think the house was haunted, rather than a rogue AI. The woman in the shower was either the Mom or a teenager daughter. I remember that the Dad was trying to escape towards the attic by breaking a hole in the floorboards, and when he went through the floorboards, one of the splinteres hurted him badly. There was a small boy too.
I'm glad you found (if not physically) your movie, breadcat!

Low budget film probably from late 90's, early 2000's.
A family move into an futuristic computerised house, I think the father figure may have worked at the company. One day he turns off the security overrides (can't remember why) and it methodically tries to kill the family. The son is working out in the gym, hears the door ring, gets some Nine Inch Nails tickets in the post and goes back to working out where he gets crushed via his barbells. The daughter doesn't like the computer watching her so covers up the camera with a towel. His wife I think is attacked by the kitchen robot helper.
Aside from that, I don't remember much more.
