Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread

As far as I know, that's kind of a gray area. The quotes namespace
was originally created for quotes about tropes that already had page quotes. So when it comes to work pages, it's a bit ambiguous. The logical assumption is that it's for quotes from the works, but following the spirit in which the quote namespace was created implies that it would be for quotes about the work in question. I don't know if there's any official ruling on whether we should only do one or the other, or both.
Ordinarily I wouldn't see it being an issue, but right now I'm looking at Quotes. The Room. I'm already iffy on the status of this whole work and its subpages, because a brief skim will make it clear that what we have on the film amounts to nonstop mocking—a lot of blurring the lines between the film and its Riff Trax, for one thing.
But the Quotes page in particular has five quotes, two of which are actually from the film (and which are infamous as some of the most ridiculous lines in the film), the other three of which are all from comedians or critics lambasting how terrible the film is.
I'll be the first to joyfully rant about how awful this movie is, but I'm not sure that's kosher on the main wiki's articles/subpages.
As a wiki we should treat The Room as respectfully as we would any other work.
We can also mock the film on the JustForFun.The Room subpage.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.I feel like if the quote can be pulled from the physical copy of the work itself (say, on the dust jacket, or the DVD commentary, or the special features), then it's legit, as well as if it's Word of God or at least Word of Saint Paul, since those also come from official sources affiliated with the original work. But personally, I think anything further than Word of Saint Paul does not belong on a work's page or its Quotes subpage.
^^^ and ^^ basically sum up my feelings on the matter.
The problem I can see with allowing quotes about the work, rather than from the work, is that it would be a veritable magnet for complaining. After all, many of the really memorable quotes about a work tend to be sarcastic comments from reviews.
I'm reminded of the old page quote (it was on the work page itself, not on the quotes page) for Space: 1999 where a U.S. judge included watching reruns of the show in a list of unusual forms of torture. Sure, it was a memorable and unique quote, but also an extreme form of Complaining About Shows You Dont Like. (The quote has since been removed, but it is referenced (not quoted) on the show's trivia page).
Edited by GnomeTitanMoving that stuff to trivia would probably be the best idea, short of getting rid of it entirely.

Someone please remind me—the Quotes subpage for a work should only contain quotes actually from the work itself, or quotes from supplemental material like the DVD commentary, etc., or Word of God at the least—it should not contain quotes by critics or pundits or the Riff Trax of the movie.
Correct/not correct?
