Franchise Original Sin is (or rather should be) YMMV if there is a general opinion that a demographic think it fits, then it stays, unless it is unreasonable/trolling (like a Justin Beiber entry on the page claiming that his Franchise Original Sin is that he exists).
I think the pokemon example is valid IMO, but could use some research. I also think the trope could be a complaining magnet
Edited by MorningStar1337Since when is Kanto exempt from this hate? Plenty of people had a problem with the Pikachu example listed here. If arguments about it have died down, it may only be because Game Freak retroactively justified it around 5th generation by introducing Soak, a move that turns the target Pokémon into a Water type by dousing it in water - exactly like what happened to Brock's Onix in said episode.

Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I guess that an other example can qualify, the start of the hate being with Onix or not- the true original rule breaking was the fight against multiple pokemon in the first episode. But the reason to this discussion is the association of the example with Periphery Hatedom- that is Flame Bait.
Edited by MagBasIt's used improperly too. Periphery Hatedom is the evil opposite of Periphery Demographic; it inspires scorn and dislike from an audience demographic that was never a target demographic in the first place. A hypothetical example would be if Super Mario had a massive hatedom among non-gamers, or if Silent Hill was strongly disliked by comedy fans.
The way this example is using it appears to say "Hatedom from fans of its Peripheries." Fans of the source material are one of the main target demographics of any adaptation and, as such, there is nothing Periphery about people who play Pokémon games but dislike the Pokémon anime. Referring to them as such is a passive-aggressive insult.
Looking at the Franchise Original Sin entry, the whole thing seems to be in dire need of an overhaul, but for this particular example, I think Periphery Hatedom has no place in it.
Edited by TobiasDrake My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Periphery Hatedom is also Flame Bait.
I'll try my hand at a rewrite for that entry and post it here when I get home.
^^ I have to say, I don't get that sense at all. The impression I had was that the Pokemon anime is targeted at a relatively young audience, and that most of the people who vocally hate it are older than that target audience - thus, a Periphery Hatedom.
Yeah, the makers behind the series make no effort to hide that the series is for kids first and foremost. This is why we have things like Ash being "reset" when visiting new regions, continuity is limited to rare callbacks (Charizard in Black and White anyone?), and why plots and aesops are recycled often with dark storylines being few and far between for older fans.
The Periphery Hatedom comes from fans that have outgrown the target demographic. They want the show makers to cater to them, but for whatever reason (money, moral guardians, etc.), the show makers either can't or choose not to outside a few exceptions.
So the show gets a bunch of variance between They Changed It, Now It Sucks! and It's the Same, Now It Sucks! from older fans/Periphery Hatedom. If we want to make the entry nicer, we might be able to rewrite it under Broken Base instead. After all there are some fans that despite the quirks of the show do enjoy the series for what it is.
The Franchise Original Sin though didn't start with Kanto. Johto started many of the tropes, running gags, etc. that are still present even in the X and Y series that older fans take issue with today. The Hoenn seasons threw in the resetting Ash plot as well as the human team dynamic that still occurs today.
Edited by Ngamer01The YMMV page in general could use a serious trim, with its idolizing of Takeshi Shudo and the older series in general. I tend to watch it sporadically and watched most of Kanto, but that doesn't mean later series aren't good at all!
The page seems to ignore the fact that Shudo's planned ending for the series was to have Ash grow up from his childish dream of becoming a Pokemon Master, the Pokemon revolting against the humans with Pikachu as their leader and Meowth as an ambassador, with the implication that Pokemon training in itself was 'wrong', Misty was written as a deliberate Faux Action Girl who claimed to know about battles but didn't at all, and the general Crapsack World the anime was in his writers' bible. (10-year-olds being legal adults and having to pay taxes, go to jail, or marry, and many, many fathers and grandfathers leaving their families only to get nowhere on their Pokémon journey. Among other things.)
Edited by lalalei2001 The Protomen enhanced my life.^ NO WONDER the older fans were idolizing Takeshi. With a plot like that it seems to take a lot of piss out of the Merchandise-Driven aspects of the franchise.
BRB, heading to check the subpages and edit the the relevant info it
Edited by MorningStar1337After thinking about it for a bit, I feel like that specific entry should just be axed instead of rewritten. It's relying on a Flame Bait trope and a trope that can easily been used as Flame Bait when used in an accusatory manner like it is here.
On a semi-related note, I do believe that a clean-up project of some sort is in order for the entire page. It's a mess of bad Example Indentation, Natter, and such.

I noted the following Franchise Original Sin example in Pokémon (Anime):
"Looking at the entire anime, one of the main driving forces of its Periphery Hatedom is the fact that the anime takes too much liberty in defying the in game mechanics, but Kanto is often exempt from this hate due to Nostalgia Filter. What we have to remember is that breaking of in game mechanics was a tradition that started right from the moment Pikachu was able to defeat Brock's Rock/Ground type Pokemon with Electric attacks."
My question is about the mention of Periphery Hatedom. And the fact that the example in question links itself to it.
