Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help. It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread for ongoing cleanup projects.

There is no mystery here. See Welcome to TV Tropes, the folder entitled "Your Rights (Legal Stuff)". Short version: everything you contribute to the wiki belongs to the wiki, unless it belongs to someone else, in which case it's governed by Fair Use.

It's mostly just a legalese sorta way of saying that The Fic May Be Yours, but the Trope Page Is Ours.

EDIT: Or not.

I was specifically wondering about WMGS or things like that.

You mean like, for example, if you make a WMG that you think is so cool you decide to turn it into a fanfic?

I really don't think TV Tropes is gonna claim copyright on you. :p

That would be ridiculous. We have no interest in stealing anyone's work or ideas. But if you post anything here, you can't claim attribution rights, you can't prevent us from using it commercially or anyone else from using it in accordance with our license, which means that you should not post any content that you think you might want to publish yourself later.

Can't claim the idea or the text itself?

Hero Gal 2347, I strongly advise you contact the owner of TV Tropes about this question, as according to Creative Commons (the license of this site), an author does NOT surrender intellectual property rights to any entity upon submission under CC licensing, they only agree to submit a copy of their own work to a site under CC licensing operative to that site, but are always free to resubmit it elsewhere under any licensing they choose.

This cannot be revoked or overridden by any other terms.

Also, while I'm loath to bring this into the open, the fact the question has been raised here has forced my hand:

We at All The Tropes never agreed to arbitrary relicensing of the content of TV Tropes from CC BY SA to CC BY NC SA, as according to our knowledge of Creative Commons, that's illegal, hence why we created our fork with any content created before the relicensing and only allow people to reimport their own contributions from TV Tropes.

In fact, we have currently been in discussions with the new owner of TV Tropes about this issue, those discussions are still ongoing and we have been attempting to seek redress for this, and I suggest if you are worried about your intellectual property rights, you do not submit anything further to TV Tropes.

I strongly advise not taking legal advice from some guy on the Internet.

I agree with rodneyAnonymous. Please do not take my word for it, consult a copyright lawyer about this.

I also advise reading this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consideration_under_American_law

You get to give them free content that they can decide to distribute or not. That does not rob you of the right to redistribute it where you please.
