See Administrivia. How To Create A Works Page:

  • What if it's a foreign work with a non-English title?
TV Tropes is an English-language wiki, so we prefer to use the English titles where applicable. So if the work has an official localized title, use the English title for the page and add the non-English title as a redirect.

Thus, you should change the Japanese name into a redirect.

However, please check to be sure you're only deleting content from the Japanese name page if it's duplicated on the English name page. If the pages have been edited separately and Hoshi No Kaabii has unique content, the content should be moved before the page is blanked and redirected.

Yeah, there Ryu Ga Gotoku page hasn't been edited since Yakuza got made, so it can be turned into a redirect safely.

I should've probably thought to do that a while ago since I made the Film.Ryu Ga Gotoku page in the first place, and I moved VideoGame.Ryu Ga Gotoku to VideoGame.Yakuza.

I find it amusing that Ryu Ga Gotoku is being made into a redirect for Yakuza on the basis of the "Use the English title" rule despite neither of those titles technically being English words. Appropriate, make no mistake, I'm not arguing against it, but still funny.

Yeah... it's not about using English words, just the name in English. If the Japanese title was "Super Great Crime Family Battle Is Go!" and the English were "Konnichiwa Baka Gaijin" we'd go with the latter anyway.

But it is sorta funny, now that I think about it. I hate the name Yakuza anyway. I blame that for the series tanking in the west (well, also for being impossibly weird).

Maybe.

Yeah, seems likely.

Does the same procedure apply to the subpages, or would that just create unnecessary redirects? There are still a lot of orphaned pages for Ryu Ga Gotoku now that the work page has been redirected.

Probably should just be cutlisted, as long as there's an appropriate version with the English name.

Well, it wouldn't make sense to have a YMMV.Ryu Ga Gotoku if there's no Film.Rya Ga Gotoku. And I don't think anyone is going to get terribly lost if they're searching for YMMV.Ryu Ga Gotoku and find Film.Ryu Ga Gotoku (which they will find, and which will redirect them to Film.Yakuza, from which they can easily get to YMMV.Yakuza. I doubt redirects for foreign names of subpages are necessary. But that's my own call; I'm not sure if there's an official policy about it.

This work-page duplication mess seems to have been arranged by spyro4, a troper who has not been active in the past few months.

Subpages can be cutlisted. The I Yakuza pages were made by Larkmarn. It's not clear to me why spyro4 made the two nearly identical Kirby pages.

^ Holla. I just realized I spent a whole paragraph explaining why they should be cutlisted without actually including the phrase "they should be cutlisted", lol.

Perhaps a silly question, but do series titles on Crunchyroll count as Official english? Example, the series Koe no Katachi (translation: The Shape of Voice) is listed on CR as A Silent Voice. Would that mean we should use A Silent Voice for the title?

Is the anime dubbed or is it just a fansub? I'm inclined to say that it's only "official" if it's Word of God or a licensed translation (which is virtually always going to be a dub).

^^ Crunchyroll is an official English distributor, so yes.

^^ Discotek Media does not hire voice actors, as far as I know. Only translators.

Sorry, I might have misspoke. Whether it's a dub is not, in itself, relevant. I just phrased it that way because an official localization is pretty much always a dub.

But if Crunchy Roll is explicitly and legally the "official" English translator and distributor of a series, then I would say that's sufficient to use their translation as the "official" title.
