I'd say the latter. After all, that's the episode that Retconned it.

However, if it's a significant enough Retcon, it could merit a mention on the earlier episode (e.g., if the Retcon changed a trope that was used in the earlier episode, you could edit the example a la "Though it is Played for Laughs, this is later Retconned to be way darker.") But I wouldn't include Retcon as one of the actual tropes on the earlier example list.

We talking about a Recap? I'd definitely say the latter as well. Recaps aren't supposed to have spoilers for future episodes, and really shouldn't be mentioning them at all.

^ Good point about the spoilers.

In Supernatural S 04 E 03 In The Beginning someone tells a grown John Winchester "Say hi to your dad" and it's said in a way that implies John's dad is around. In a later episode, don't remember which, John's dad hasn't been around since John was a kid. So how would I say anything about the retcon? Would it be better to just say something on the episode where that's first changed? Or should I ask in Lost and Found for a trope about a dad that exists in one episode and not another?

Edit: ^^ It's not really a spoiler though, It's just a backstory that was changed to allow for a plotline

My point is that in general, it should go on the later episode since that kind of information is at least discussing something that hasn't happened yet, and it may be a spoiler. This specific example isn't really a spoiler, but if we're got a policy in place, we should be prepared for it.

All right then. I guess that means I have to go watch all the Supernatural episodes until I find where they changed the info. It's just as well you can't see me, as I'm pretty sure the excited grin on my face is a little deranged :-D

After seeing the example, I'mma cement my opinion on the "keep it on the episode doing the retconning" side of the fence, regardless of whether the retcon is a spoiler.

The retcon really doesn't include anything relevant to the experience of watching the earlier episode. It's enough to include it on the latter episode and mention specifically which previous episode(s) are affected by the retcon.

I think that's not so much retcon as Series Continuity Error.
