Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
The description of the Trap Master example not mentions that the moves in question are entry hazards, the description of the No-Sell example not mentions that them are immune to Ground-type and, similar to the other two, the description of the Eyes Always Shut example not describes their appearance.
Not quite sure what's meant either but the Trap Master trope refers to Forretress & Ferrothorn as one due to learning all the "entry hazards" (trope page's words), or all but one in the latter case.
I think MagBas forgot a "does" or three in there. (As in, it should read "does not mention", instead of "not mentions".)
Regarding the question, the first and third cases do need to be rewritten to give a clearer indication of the game mechanics. (Assume the reader has never played Pokemon before.) The second one could stand to explain what the shut eyes tell us about the character's - Gulpin's - temperament and personality, although it isn't as big a problem as the other two.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)The entries need to be written as though the person reading them as at best marginal knowledge of Pokemon (rare but possible :p ). So what they are needs to be concisely described; what the initial entries have is "this is this" without adding 'and it this is what it means'.
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettThat's true with Trap Master and No-Sell, but I'm not sure what you'd add to Eyes Always Shut without invoking Department of Redundancy Department. I mean, are we just supposed to have
- Eyes Always Shut: Gulpin is never drawn with its eyes open.
Which is accurate, but I'm not sure how much it actually adds.
Reaction Image RepositoryEyes Always Shut has a bit more to the trope - for example, that someone who fits the trope usually acts and behaves like they can still see. Also, the trope is used to indicate a wise character - does any of that happen here?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWell, as a Poison type Gulpin is certainly unpleasant. Though other instances of the trope on the page do not fit that definition then.
Also, the point about "not everyone knows what the Pokemon looks like" - all the pages have images of them, just saying.
What about this entry for Volbeat and Illumise?
- Big Creepy-Crawlies: They're both two feet tall and in the Human-type egg group.
" all the pages have images of them, just saying."
An image is not context. Please see The Appearance Cleanup Thread
Paraphrased: Frequently this sort of trope will be named after the bit of appearance it's troping, but leave out the meaning of the characteristic. Just having blond hair isn't a trope. Appearance tropes are the most likely tropes to have no context associated with them. All Zero Context Examples are bad and are not allowed on wiki pages but they are a special sort of evil when it comes to appearance tropes as they further the idea that the appearance is the trope and not the meaning behind it. Report them here and the clean-up will be handled.
Edited by crazysamaritan Link to TRS threads in project mode here. There are a lot of shoehorns there. For example, No-Sell is not a Competitive Balance trope. Elemental Rock–Paper–Scissors is the proper usage; in that entry, explain the Pokemon's elemental strengths and weaknesses. Trap Master implies that their "kit" is based on traps, not that they have a single trap-type move.
Trap Master: "A character whose style of fighting isn't about hitting the opponent directly. This character far prefers arranging traps in such a way that, when the opponent arrives, he only has to let the victim act, or activate the traps with minimal effort, to utterly dominate said opponent."
Edited by Fighteer "It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

I have a question about some things going on at Pokémon: Generation III - Treecko to Sharpedo. Some examples are being repaired due to being Zero Context Examples, but some of such being tagged do not seem to fit. For example:
- Trap Master: Naturally learns Toxic Spikes, and can be bred to know Spikes.
- These moves are entry hazards, the Pokemon learns them.- Eyes Always Shut: Gulpin's design.
- Self-explanatory, this is what the Pokemon looks like.- No-Sell: To Ground-type moves, as Flying-types.
- It's part of the Pokemon Rock–Paper–Scissors dynamic that Ground-type moves have no effect on Flying-types.I guess my question is, if examples such as these count as ZCE, then what is needed to qualify as context?
