I can't find any reviews or summaries of "Bond of the Fire," but I did find the blurb from the back cover. It sounds like the same book I read, but, like I said, I barely remember any of it. Ironically the blurb says, "The reader will long remember the events in this book."
Anyway, thanks for (probably) solving this mystery.

This was a young adult book about a boy and his pet wolf in prehistoric times. It was fairly realistic (no dinosaurs or Flintstones-type stuff). I don't really remember anything about the plot, just a little about the characters and setting. I think keeping a pet was a novel concept, because the boy asks, "Can an animal have a name?" An adult replies, "Every rock on the mountain can have a name if you want." I also remember an old storyteller saying the wind was born when a man tore a hole in the sky with his walking stick.
