I have spent the past three hours trying to remember a story I know I read within the past couple of years - it's not even so much that I want to read it again as I want to prove that it exists and I'm not imagining the memory. The details are fuzzy, but several things to stick out in mind, hopefully someone will be able to help. The points I remember are as follows:
- The protagonist was a man, possibly a writer, who inherited a house from a relative - his father, if memory serves. I distinctly remember the house having no right angles - it had corners but the rooms were constructed so that none of those corners was exactly 90 degrees. - I'm 98% sure the house also had a secret room/passage, and I believe there were some kind of scratches on the floor that indicated a person had been kept inside. - The man found an unfinished manuscript or screenplay that the aforementioned dead relative had started writing about the house and became obsessed with finishing it. There was evidence to suggest that his entire family had a history of being obsessed with the house itself, I think.
I know this is vague and I can't remember if it was a novel or a short story or what, and for all I know I might just be imagining it, but if someone could help me out I would be eternally grateful.
