Okay, I remember this show. It aired in Australia (I believe on the Nine Network) some time in the early 2000s. The protagonist was a teenage boy who had some sort of magical instrument, though I can't remember for sure what (I think it was a trumpet or something similar). I only ever saw one episode so I didn't understand at the time completely what was going on but I remember him having two other characters he was in contact with (one male, one female, though I couldn't guess at age other than to say they were older than him) who may have been guardians of the magical instrument. I remember them trying to get him to practice on the device which suggested that skill was needed and it wasn't all magic. At the end of the episode he ended up playing with this band and doing quite badly, making him regret not having practiced better.
I couldn't actually say for sure whether it was a series about a magical instrument or it was a series about some magical device which could change forms (I vaguely recall seeing it change shapes at some point) in which only one episode featured it as an instrument.
