A friend told me about this short story, I think she said it was by Nathaniel Hawthorne, but I've been unable to identify it. As I remember the plot, there is a sculptor who was in love with a woman who left him for another man. She comes to visit the sculptor with her large beastly child. He gives the child a toy he made and the child immediately breaks it.
