There is no ban on spoiler tags in character sheets. There is a ban on spoiler tagging trope names, though.

Eh? Trope names are not supposed to be spoiler tagged. You are fully authorized to remove that.

EDIT: Ninja attack!

EDIT 2: Wait, maybe I misread. If a trope is going to be a massive "ruin the entire work" spoiler, it should just be left off entirely.

Honestly, I object to this idea....if trope names aren't supposed to be spoiled on character sheets, is it okay if we now try to add more spoiler warnings now on character sheets?

^If you think a particular character's tropes are really going to ruin things, you could add in a little warning above his trope list. That seems reasonable. If you end up adding them to almost every character, a single warning at the top would probably be better, though.

EDIT: Also, if the whole page needs that warning, spoiler tags should probably be removed entirely.

The best way I've seen this handled is to add it to the character's little blurb at the top of their character profile in spoilers and not in their trope list, if that makes sense. For example:

Character Name

Voiced by: Actor's Name.

A main character, really likes shooting things. Killed off for real after he turns out to be The Mole.

  • All-Loving Hero: At least at first, despite his Trigger-Happy leanings. Turns out it was an act to get the heroes to like him.
  • Arm Cannon: His left arm turns into a gun the size of a supertanker.

Nope. No spoilers above the example line. It's on the Spoiler Policy. If it's something you have to tag, don't put it in the description. If a character has so many spoiler tropes that they're impossible to discuss without tagging everything (such as a character who's name and very existence is a spoiler), change the name of the folder to "Spoiler Character," and then remove all spoiler tag from the entire entry. If the entire page is full of characters like that, put a really big warning at the top of the page to the effect of "Warning! Due to the spoileriffic nature of every single character on this page, it is impossible to discuss anything without whiting out everything. Therefore, all spoilers are unmarked."

Now, as for less extreme measures. My vote is still to hide the spoiler tropes in other entries. So, just for example:

Mods haven't come down with a ruling on that, but I still think it's a good compromise.

There is a ruling on "wicks that would be considered spoilers in spoiler tags". The ruling is don't do it. You could leave it as text, but not a wick.

That just sounds like you could do Almost Dead Guy instead of Almost Dead Guy. It just means a copy and paste into the search box instead of a click. Of course, someone who really wanted to be spoiled would take the extra steps, and would have far less reason to gripe.

Per Word Of Eddie, trope names, entire examples, and above-the-line descriptions may never, ever be spoiler tagged. If that means you have to put spoiler warnings in the header, then do it.

^ What's the reasoning behind this policy, actually? Seems to me that it would only work for characters who are Walking Spoilers, while not so much for some others. Death Tropes, Heel–Face Turn, Face–Heel Turn and other revelations seems to be an instant-spoiler the moment it gets tagged to the character even without needing context, annd putting spoiler warning in the description don't seem very useful, since the reader don't know which spoiler to avoid.

The purpose of a wiki is to convey clear, useful information. Examples that are completely redacted fail at this purpose. Not being spoiled is secondary at best.

Plus if you spoiler out the trope name then all you've done is turn it into Schmuck Bait, which is worse than a spoiler.

Is this not the same thing with any spoiler?

Fighteer MOD (Time Abyss)

Spoilers can be written in such a way that they do not obscure the explanation of the trope example. That's what we care about. We have a whole policy and everything on it, I think it's around here somewhere. Oh, right.
