Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
I think you're being too academic here. the issue here would be Zero Context Example. Bold Inflation is mostly harmless fun considering the reputation of that game.
Is dast der Zerstorer? Odar die Schopfer?^ Yeah, found it, you're right. But if that's the case then There Should Be A Rule.
Edited by ShanghaiSlave Is dast der Zerstorer? Odar die Schopfer?Azure Seas, you can revert with a note that it's mod fiat per ATT. If Ano Baka Desu changes it again, he gets dealt with.
On Demon's Souls: E Kono Mai readded a a whole indented Zero Context Example (bold trope name and all) but only added context on the top bullet point. just sayin'.
EDIT: somehow, Demon Souls doesn't have a disambig.
EDIT: oh, I misspelled it.
Edited by ShanghaiSlave Is dast der Zerstorer? Odar die Schopfer? We'll see if he responds. Those examples are indeed badly written.
Edited by Fighteer "It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"There should be a rule about emphasis markup for trope names, indeed - an actual written rule on the wiki itself rather than discussions on ATT, something that can be cited if this happens again. (Which it's fair to assume it will do.)
Would such a rule go on Text Formatting Rules, perhaps? Or How to Write an Example? Or Tips for Editing?
The latter two, I imagine.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"How to Write an Example seems the more logical of the two. Perhaps something like this after "Don't Use Bad Markup":
Don't Overuse Emphasis Markup: Boldface, italics, and ALLCAPS for emphasis are best used sparingly when writing examples. Put too much of an example in emphasis markup, and nothing stands out. If you do emphasise something, just use one form of markup; combining two or more results in the text equivalent of SHOUTING FULL VOLUME. Save that for quotes where the speaker actually is shouting full volume. The names of tropes on work pages and their subpages never go in emphasis markup for any reason; if you want to emphasise how powerfully a work uses a trope, write a compelling description for it.
Thoughts?
And it's been copied over to How to Write an Example. (If anyone has any suggested changes... well, nothing stopping you from making them yourself!)
Looks good. Thanks for the help, everyone.
ShanghaiSlave: I know I'm a stickler for this, but I've seen this taken to some extremes — there was a character on a characters page that had five tropes bolded, with one having the bold-italics-all-caps treatment, which brings to mind the "when everything is emphasized, nothing is" bit, and there were some really bizarre choices for bolding as well, like Ninja.

I took out some meaningless bold-all-caps inflation on the Dark Souls page
and cited Bold Inflation in my edit reason. AnoBakaDesu put it back, reasoning that Bold Inflation wasn't part of Administrivia and saying that Demon's Souls also did the trope bolding thing. What do I do now?
