I've been trying to recall the title with no success for a few years, so I'm posting this, and hoping someone knows what I'm talking about. This was a book that I read back when I was in middle school, between 1995-1998. The book as fairly long.
In the book, there was a nuclear war that occurred, and as a result, people had to go underground. However, I recall that there was one girl and an older man that got stuck above ground, and had to survive in the nuclear winter. They survived above ground, and eventually had children. The descendants had new mutations, which include the following: Very white skin (not 100% sure of this), silvery-white hair, very light dusting of silvery-white fur on arms, and something strange happened with their eyes, I can't recall what.
In the meantime, the story also follows another character (or characters) that went underground, and it appears that the human race is dying out underground. After a certain number of years, one of the humans underground decide to venture out, and meet one of the descendants of the couple who survived above ground, and something happens. I can't recall what happens, though.
That's all I can remember...hopefully someone can fill in the details and give me the name of the book! I happened to find it in my school library, and after I finished reading it, I didn't think to take note of the title, and put it back. I've been regretting that decision since then, since I want to read it again!
