I thought this might have been something by Madeleine L Engle, but going through summaries of her books in the other wiki didn't turn up anything familiar, so I guess it's just some unrelated sf/fantasy Young Adult Literature that I may have read around the same time I was into A Wrinkle In Time and some of her other novels. Anyway, the main thing I remember is that the main characters, who I believe are siblings, pass by a statue with "Peabody" engraved on it while on a car trip, and this cracks them up, so they start going back and forth with things like "carrotbody", "celerybody", that sort of thing. Later on, they make a diorama-like model of an imaginary city note , and include Peabody in the form of an empty can of peas. I think once the more fantasy-like elements start popping up, there's something about them actually entering their own diorama and Peabody actually interacting with them in some way.
