Irene is correct. In Pokemon, the starters are the equivalent of being a main cast member. The point of Ensemble Dark Horse is that it's a relative unknown, a side-character, or some other non-important character that reaches popularity. In Pokemon's case, the starters and the box legendaries are definitely too main-stream to qualify for Ensemble Dark Horse.
I mean, I agree with the opinion of the other guy. He's right, Greninja is both awesome and probably the most popular fully-evolved starter... but he's also too major a character too qualify. Ditto Mega Charizard X, especially since Pokémon Origins was pretty much a two-hour lead up to his reveal.

I think he's just a bit confused as to what the trope is so a mod commenting on it would probably clear things up fine. To be honest, I don't blame him since Ensemble Dark Horse is often misused as "really popular character" with no regards to the other criteria, so from his perspective he'd think the guy who cut it was making up criteria.

Darth Megatron's entire reason is "he's popular, so it counts."
Unfortunately, that's not what the trope is about. Which is kind of where the issue is coming from.
I don't mind either way myself, but it was an edit war too, so... that shouldn't be happening, respectively.
Shadow?I don't know if you're saying that in favor of Irene's statement, or Darth Megatron's.
No one's saying they're not major Pokemon. Just the opposite, really. They're pushed as major Pokemon from the getgo. Ensemble Dark Horse is supposed to be about something that isn't pushed as a major or important character but fans wound up liking anyway.

So... someone else went and readded both the other starters. Meaning now all three starters are listed as Ensemble Dark Horse, which is positively misuse.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. There is a topic on the Discussion page about Ensemble Dark Horse. I think we could safely pull with a note saying bring it to discussion, now that I think about it. Might be easier. I still would like a mod's approval on this, mind, but that seems safe enough. We could certainly repull the Finnekin and Chesnaut on the grounds of the Discussion page.

We've got a bit of a problem here with the editor Darth Megatron. He's re-adding
an entry multiple times despite the fact that it cannot count. He's adding a main character to the Ensemble Darkhorse after specifically being told in the edit reasons that the character cannot apply. He created an Edit War, and refuses to read how the trope works. Popular characters are not what an Ensemble Dark Horse is alone.
