I don't remember too much about the band. I think they were mostly or entirely men, and I don't remember the sound too well, other then just to say it was "rock". I think it may have been harder rather than softer, but not too hard.
The song itself would obviously have these children's voices, which were quite a contrast to the band. Anyone who has seen this performance should remember it, and probably anyone who has heard the song.
The rhythm for the chorus was just sort of "dum dum dum/ dum dum dum/ dum dum dum/ DUM dum dum" "Come and play/[Something] day/come and play/[something] day"
The [something] was two syllables, and I thought it was "circus".
I may be misremembering EVERYTHING about the band, I am only certain about the children singing these words.

Early 80s or late 80s? And have you already ruled out the major acts of the time (Queen, David Bowie, and so on)?
Anyway, I tried some combinations on Google and so far the closest thing I got was 'Circus Games' (1980) by the Skids. According to The Other Wiki, though, they never played it on Top of the Pops (Wikipedia only lists 'The Saints Are Coming' and 'Into the Valley/Masquerade', in 1978 and 1979 respectively).

"Circus GAMES" by the Skids!!! (I had misheard the lyric as "Circus Day")
And they DID play it on Top of the Pops, here is the evidence:
Here is another performance by the Skids of the same song:

This certainly looks like a Top of the Pops performance. And actually, THIS is the performance I am remembering. If they played more than once on TOTP, they must have been number one.

I thought this would be easy to find, but so far no luck.
I'm looking for a performance by a British band. It might not technically be a "video". I remember seeing it on a British music show, that I am pretty sure would have been Top of the Pops. In the 1980's.
The band were just doing a normal performance, but then it would briefly cut to a film of British children, boys and girls, in school uniforms, singing the chorus. I think there were about 4 of these children, my memory is 2 boys and 2 girls. The chorus went "Come and play/[something] day!/Come and play/[something] day" I was pretty sure that the [something] was "circus", but I have been googling that with no luck, so I think I may be misrembering that word.
(It has absolutely nothing to do with the Sesame street song "Somebody come and play", which kept coming up on my google searches.)
