I remember reading this book as a kid, although I can't remember if it was a child's book or more of a young adult book. For some reason, there are all these space colonists leaving Earth, and I believe it's implied that the Earth is eventually destroyed. This ship of colonists ends up on a planet that has different plants and water, but no other life forms. What stands out to me vividly is that there are these hard, glass-like wheat plants. There's a bit struggle as food is running out, and one of the colonists eventually grinds the glass wheat into flour to make bread from it. The big climax at the end is that the food is edible and that they will survive.
There's probably a lot more to the story, but I don't have a lot of details. I would have read this book somewhere between 1992-1998, but it may have been an older book I found in the library. Ring any bells?
