I can't remember the title, but I'm quite sure it was written by Paul Jennings
(when I was in primary school my teacher read it to the class and she was a fan, plus it fits his style).
EDIT: It's called "No Is Yes" and was published in Quirky Tails
.

This was from a collection of short stories. It was about a girl who was taught the meaning of words that was the opposite of what they meant from a young age by her father (who I think was some form of scientist?). She made friends with a boy who had learnt language normally, and they met up and he tried to teach her what various words meant to most people, so she could communicate with others.
I remember her offering salt in his tea, and once they were meant to meet up by a lamp-post but she understood lamp-post to mean 'tree'.
I would really love to look at it again, I remember really liking it as a kid.
