I once read a fantasy novel, in which a random everyman is first attacked by a bunch of strangely antiquated-looking thugs, and then pulled into an adventure in a Magical Land. Said land is essentially Earth, but with slower flow of time, and thus still in the The Cavalier Years. It's for some reason compared to the rim of a wheel circling around our world as the axle, can be reached by ship, and is kept secret from our world. The protagonist then has his share of sailing the alternate-Caribbean, fighting a clan/tribe of pirates who call themselves Wolves or something and were those thugs who attacked him, and dealing with voodoo magicians.
Does it ring any bells?
